Social landlords are bringing their homes up to standard faster than forecast, new figures reveal.
According to the Housing Corporation, 63,931 properties achieved the decent homes standard last year, compared with a target of 20,000.
A total of 293,556 homes owned by associations failed the standard at the end of 2005/06, but this included 17,071 homes that had been transferred from councils during the previous 12 months.
Transfer proposals from a further 38 local authorities were submitted to the Department for Communities and Local Government in July.
Ministers admit that 3%—5% of social housing will still fall below the standard in December 2010.
