TPA highlights town hall top earners

Almost 3,500 local government executives in the UK earned more than £100,000 last year, according to research from the Taxpayers’ Alliance.

The campaign group’s annual Town Hall Rich List found that in 2013/14, 537 council employees received remuneration in excess of £150,000, while 23 council employees received packages worth more than £250,000.

Haringey is the local authority with the most employees earning in excess of £100,000 with 68.

The council employee with the largest total remuneration in the UK was Jill Stannard, chief executive of Cumbria County Council, with a £411,025 package.

London was the region with the biggest concentration of top earners. A total of 1,029 executives working in local government in the capital are paid more than £100,000. Of these, 33 are paid more than £200,000.

Remuneration rates were lowest in Northern Ireland, which had just 15 senior managers earning more than £100,000 and none earning more than £150,000.

TPA chief executive Jonathan Isaby said: “Local authorities that are providing more for less and delivering council tax cuts clearly have talented people at the helm, but taxpayers living in poorly performing areas will be furious at the scale of some of these massive pay awards.”

He added that, with councils under increased pressure to make savings, pay and perks needed to be examined.

“We all deserve to know how our money is being spent, and taxpayers should have the right to decide if they are getting value for money from public servants.”
