Prime Minister Tony Blair and Environment Secretary David Miliband have launched a drive to cut carbon emissions in Whitehall by 30% by 2020.

All Whitehall departments were expected to become 'carbon neutral' by 2012 by offsetting emissions against environmentally friendly measures, they added.

The moves were in response to a report by the Sustainable Development Taskforce, published on June 12, which said the government 'could do more to lead by example to achieve its own policy goals,' Miliband said. 'We need to show that real improvements are possible and must deliver real value for money for the public purse.'
