Homebuilding on brownfield land has hit a record high of 72%, according to figures from the government.

The figure is up from 56% in 1997. Housing density is at 40 dwellings per hectare, up from 25 in 1997, according to the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.

The government is committed to developing previously used land to preserve the countryside and regenerate rundown areas.

Planning and housing minister Yvette Cooper said: 'We are building more homes on brownfield sites than ever before. Today's statistics show it is possible to build more homes in the right places while protecting the environment and providing jobs and public services.'
