Up to a million new homes could be built on available brownfield land in England, according to the Department for Communities and Local Government.

The department published annual statistics this week estimating that 63,500 hectares of previously developed land was available for development, with 44% — 27,600 hectares — suitable for housing. In the Southeast, there was enough land for 400,000 homes.

Junior planning minister Baroness Andrews said three-quarters of new developments were already being built on re-used sites. 'In some areas it may be necessary to bring forward other sites if we are to meet local demand,' she said.
