Six cities have been named by Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell as contenders to be European Capital of Culture 2008, the year in which Britain is guaranteed the title.

Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle-Gateshead and Oxford were selected on October 30.

The European Union has instituted the Capital of Culture programme to replace the previous City of Culture scheme which began in 1985. Glasgow was the last British city to hold the title, in 1990, and benefited from a substantial increase in tourism.

'All the bidding cities recognised the power of culture and creativity as an engine for regeneration and a rich seam for boosting civic pride,' said Jowell.
