Peter Kane has been appointed the 80th Chamberlain of the City of London Corporation, succeeding former CIPFA president Chris Bilsland.

Kane is currently finance director at the Home Office and has also held a number of senior roles at the Cabinet Office, the Treasury and in local government. He has a PhD in economics from the London School of Economics and is a member of the CIPFA council.

As Chamberlain, he will serve as the corporation’s director of finance, treasurer and chief financial adviser and will be responsible for the investment of its funds.

Commenting on his appointment, Kane said: ‘I am delighted and honoured to be able to continue serving the public as Chamberlain of the City of London Corporation. It is a unique role dating back to 1237 and provides a great opportunity to help London respond to the challenges of the 21st century.’

CIPFA chief executive Rob Whiteman congratulated Kane on his appointment. He said Kane and Bilsland were both highly respected and experienced members of CIPFA.

‘We wish Peter every success in this historic and important role, the oldest public finance position in the country,’ said Whiteman.

The City of London Corporation provides local government and policing services to the ‘Square Mile’ business district at the heart of the capital. It also looks after some of London’s important heritage sites and green spaces including Tower Bridge, the Barbican Centre and Hampstead Heath, and promotes the ‘City’ as a world-leading business and finance hub.

The Chamberlain is one of the corporation’s three official trustees and assumes a range of important civic and ceremonial responsibilities including admitting people to the Freedom of the City and being responsible for the advice and guidance provided to City livery companies on matters of protocol, procedure, ceremony and governance.
