More people will be encouraged to cycle to
work as part of a programme backed by ministers and 70 public and private sector employers.
The ‘Cycle to Work Guarantee’ scheme, which involves employers providing parking and changing facilities, also entitles participating firms to tax breaks for new bikes and cycling equipment.
Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis said: ‘If proper facilities were more widely available, I believe far more people would cycle to work. At present only 3% do so.
‘We could double or treble that figure with proper bike storage and changing facilities and safe cycle routes – and that’s my aim.’
