Scottish Water claims to be the fastest improving water company in the UK.
In its annual report for 2007/08, the public sector utility said it continued to outperform its regulatory contract while improving service to customers and keeping charges steady.
It added that the average household bill for 2008/09 was £20 lower than the average for England and Wales.
Scottish Water said it invested £625m in 2007/08, bringing the total investment since 2006 to more than £1bn. According to the report, it beat its Overall Performance Assessment customer target by 16%.
The OPA score includes drinking water quality, water pressure and sewer flooding.
The target for the year was 213 points, but Scottish Water achieved 248. However, the company did not meet its target for reducing leakages, even though these have been reduced by 180 million litres of water a day in the past two years.
Richard Ackroyd, chief executive of Scottish Water, said: 'We are investing in the future of Scotland's infrastructure by transforming the water network to world-class standards.'
