Schools across Wales are to receive procurement guidance that Welsh Assembly Government ministers say could save millions of pounds.

Launching the Schools Revenue Support Project on September 3, Finance Minister Andrew Davies said: 'The project was set up to help schools to save money by linking up with the rest of the public sector in Wales when purchasing their equipment, teaching and office materials.

'Using this approach, schools can save money through economies of scale without compromising quality, rather than buying individually where they may pay a higher price.'

The project was undertaken in collaboration with directors of education, local authority procurement units, the Welsh Local Government Association and the Association of School and College Leaders.

'The schools sector has already saved around £1.3m through smarter purchasing,' Davies said.

Education Minister Jane Hutt added: 'Delivering high-quality education relies on well-run and managed schools. The savings made through this initiative will enable money to be ploughed into other vital services.'

Further support will be available through the website 'xchangewales', a portal now being piloted. This will allow schools to order products and services online.
