Households in England are now recycling more than 30% of their waste, according to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

The latest estimates show that 33.2% of waste was recycled between October 2006 and September 2007. In the same period, overall municipal waste remained at around 29 million tonnes and the amount sent to landfill fell to 16.1 million tonnes, from 16.9 million tonnes between April 2006 and March 2007.

Figures published in the Office for National Statistics' Regional trends report on May 8 also showed a strong increase in recycling between 2002/03 and 2005/06.

Paul Bettison, chair of the Local Government Association's environment board, said the figures were a positive move, but that councils still faced fines of up to £3bn if the amount of waste going to landfill were not slashed.

'Britain is still the dustbin of Europe. It is pleasing to see our recycling rates reach a high of 33%, but other countries are still recycling up to twice as much,' he said.
