WGLA leaders honoured by Queen

Former Welsh Local Government Association leader Alex Aldridge was among those honoured in the Queen's Birthday List last week.

Former Welsh Local Government Association leader Alex Aldridge was among those honoured in the Queen's Birthday List last week.

Aldridge, a former leader of Flintshire County Council, was awarded an OBE for services to local government, as was Meryl Gravell, the WLGA's presiding officer.

Among awards to CIPFA members, Michael Greenwood, regional director for local government practice for the Department for Communities and Local Government in the Northwest, was made a CBE, and Ray Cowlishaw, chief executive of Derby City Council, received an OBE for services to local government.

David Clement, treasurer of the Northern Ireland Council for Voluntary Action, was made an OBE for services to the community.

Among other public sector awards, Ruth Silver, principal of Lewisham College in south London, was made a dame for services to further education.

Also honoured was the Children's Commissioner for England, Professor Al Aynsley-Green, who received a knighthood.
