The Commons Treasury select committee has called on the government to consider raising air passenger duty to enhance its efforts to meet environmental targets.
In its report on the 2006 Budget, published on April 24, the committee describes the government's attempts to justify freezing the duty for the fifth year running as 'incoherent and unconvincing'.
Committee chair John McFall said: 'The UK is currently lagging behind on its domestic CO2 targets, and greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union from international aviation rose by 73% between 1990 and 2003.
'In addition to continuing to press for action at the EU level, the government must also act at a domestic level.'
