Government spending of more than £1bn to curb truancy has had little or no effect, according to research.

At least 70,000 children in England and Wales still fail to turn up for school each day, according to New Philanthropy Capital, which undertakes research into charities.

The number of pupils excluded permanently for poor behaviour has risen by 20% since 2000 to more than 10,500 a year.

Another report, by the charity Action on Rights for Children, based on a survey of 120 local education authorities reaches similar conclusions.

It showed that truancy sweeps used up 16,318 police hours in a year without improving the rate of absence.
