Wales is to get a more coherent trunk road network, but not for at least five years.
Transport Minister Andrew Davies has announced a package under which 13 sections of road will be given trunk status and so be taken over by the Welsh Assembly. A further 11 stretches of the current network will lose the status and be handed over to local authorities.
The changes follow a review in November 2001 and public consultation last winter.
Davies said that the time needed for engineering studies and statutory processes meant it would be at least five years before most changes could be made.
He said: 'The trunk road network plays a vital strategic role both economically and socially.'
