Rundown towns given £53m boost

English Heritage is to mastermind a £53m scheme to regenerate the UK's townscapes.

Market towns hit by foot and mouth and rundown city areas, such as Bridport in Dorset, Wolverhampton and New Cross in south London, are to receive funds, to be matched by cash from councils.

English Heritage chair Sir Neil Cossons said: 'Investment in the historic heart of a community creates and safeguards jobs and attracts people to an area.'
