Lifelong learning minister Malcolm Wicks this week invited companies to join a public-private partnership to provide the discount smart card for young people.
The Connexions card will also store CV information, act as an e-purse and simplify the college enrolment process. Studies are under way in eight pilot areas, where the card is used for electronic enrolment, monitoring attendance and crediting payments to students.
It has been designed to operate alongside the Education Maintenance Allowances for less well-off youngsters which are currently being tested across the country.
Wicks said: 'The card will reward young people who continue learning by giving them something in return. We want to remove the barriers to learning by cutting the cost of transport, books and material.'
