A lack of comprehensive data is hampering the government’s ability to track how funding cuts have impacted councils in England, according to the Institute for Government.
A senior council leader has warned that local authorities will face legal challenges over failure to provide statutory services during the next parliament if funding cuts persist.
The chancellor will no doubt find some additional funding for flood defences in this month’s Budget. Perhaps he should be taking the same approach when it comes to other critical services
