Javid promoted to Cabinet following Miller departure

9 Apr 14
Treasury minister Sajid Javid has been promoted to the Cabinet as culture secretary following Maria Miller’s resignation today

In a government reshuffle caused by Miller’s decision to step down following controversy over her expenses claims, Nicky Morgan, the current economic secretary to the Treasury, has been promoted to replace Javid as financial secretary in the department.

Morgan, who has only been a minister since the last reshuffle in October, has been replaced by Andrea Leadsom by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Javid becomes the first MP from the 2010 intake to reach Cabinet level. He has held both the economic secretary and financial secretary roles since joining the government in September 2012.

Miller decided to step down after she was criticised by the House of Commons standards committee for failing to co-operate with a probe into her expenses.

Her subsequent 32-second apology in the House of Commons was also widely criticised for being too brief and failing to show contrition following the censure.
