An inquiry examining the potential for greater devolution to counties has today been launched by a new cross-party group of MPs and peers.

The County All-Party Parliamentary Group will act as a forum to allow national and local politicians to examine the ‘daunting challenges’ facing communities, the County Councils Network said.

CCN has worked with Henry Smith, the MP for Crawley and former leader of West Sussex County Council, to establish the group, which will have its first meeting today. More than 50 MPs and peers have so far signed up.

Its initial focus will be examining how councils can be better supported by Whitehall to drive growth, and it will publish a report on its inquiry in June. Counties have called for localism freedoms similar to the city deals being negotiated for 28 urban areas.

‘This is the crucial time for securing a sustainable recovery across the UK and counties have a huge role to play,’ Smith said.

‘In sectors like manufacturing and construction, in high-tech industries and green technology, counties are leading the way, but they face unnecessary barriers on reinvesting the proceeds of growth back into their economies.

‘Given the right tools and powers, counties have the chance to create truly vibrant economies across the UK.’

CCN chair David Hodge said the group would be a powerful forum to help Westminster better understand the challenges counties face.

‘CCN are committed to speaking up for counties at the national level and making sure we have the tools to deliver the best outcomes for our residents,’ he added.
