Private Finance Initiative credits worth more than £430m have been awarded to six local authority street lighting projects.

The Department for Transport said these were: Cambridgeshire County Council, £100.1m; a partnership of Oldham and Rochdale metropolitan borough councils, £123.1m; a partnership of the London boroughs of Croydon and Lewisham, £151.7m; and Knowsley Metropolitan Borough Council, £58.3m.

Transport minister Norman Baker said: ‘Good street lighting is vitally important to reducing road accidents, crime and the fear of crime.

‘We will continue to invest in transport infrastructure that improves safety and provides reassurance to local communities.’

Each project involves a five-year investment period, when light columns, traffic signs and street bollards will be replaced, followed by a 25-year maintenance and repair programme.
