Ian Perkin, treasurer and chief financial officer of Surrey Police Authority, has been elected honorary treasurer of CIPFA for 2011/12.

A ballot of members closed last night with Perkin receiving 1,512 votes. He defeated independent consultant Jaki Salisbury, who garnered 989 votes.

Perkin will take up his post on the CIPFA council following the institute’s AGM on July 5.

In his election statement Perkin pledged to bring ‘new and imaginative ideas’ to CIPFA and outlined his intention to increase membership of those aged under 45.

‘In difficult times for the public sector we need a strong dynamic CIPFA,’ he said.

Perkin’s career has spanned a range of public sector organisations, including St George’s Healthcare NHS Trust and the London boroughs of Wandsworth, Lambeth and Sutton. He has also worked at the adult education college Hillcroft and the motor sports company Wimbledon Speedway.

The appointment of CIPFA’s honorary treasurer comes after the unopposed elections of Chris Bilsland, chamberlain of the City of London, as CIPFA president for 2011/12, and Tony Redmond, chair and chief executive of the Commission for Local Administration in England, as CIPFA vice president.
