Four new members will join the CIPFA Council in June following the latest round of elections.

Sitting on the CIPFA Council for the first time are: Andrew Burns, director of finance at Staffordshire County Council; Angela Brown, an independent consultant; and Christina Earls, a review manager at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Brian Roberts, director of corporate resources at Leicestershire County Council, returns to the CIPFA Council after a period of absence.

Topping the poll with 1,706 votes was Judith Savage, an accountant now at Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council, who was first elected to the council just last year.

A newly qualified member, Savage’s election material stressed the importance of students who she called the ‘lifeblood’ of the institute. She said students and newly qualified members should be encouraged to play a more active role.

In second place was Claire Gravil, divisional accountant for surgery at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with 1,632 votes. Jane Cuthbertson from South Tyneside Council was third with 1,480 votes, closely followed by Mike Owen, director of finance and e-commerce at Bury Council, who received 1,474 votes.

There was no ballot in the statutory external audit category this year and the two candidates, Caroline Al-Beyerty from the Audit Commission and Martin Sinclair from the National Audit Office, were accepted on to the Council automatically.

Turnout was 21.3%, up from 20.5% last year after several years of declining participation.
