The Wales Audit Office is asking for opinions on a new code setting out principles of best professional practice.

The revised Code of Audit Practice, launched on January 4, applies to both the work of appointed auditors of local government bodies and to the audit and inspection activities of the Auditor General.

The code requires that auditors carry out their functions consistently and in accordance with four principles: being public focused, independent, proportionate and accountable.

The WAO hopes the new code will be approved and take effect on April 1.

Jeremy Colman, auditor general for Wales, said: ‘My Code of Audit Practice sets out very clearly the standards and quality of work that I expect from my audit and inspection staff and appointed auditors to local government. It is an important tool, designed to ensure that there is consistent delivery of high quality work across Wales.’

The consultation period closes on January 29.
