Local authorities are dealing with fewer planning applications for new homes and other developments.

Figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that district councils in England received 118,000 applications in the second quarter of 2009 – down 21% on the same period the previous year.

A total of 105,000 applications were determined – down 27% on the same quarter in 2008 but up 12% on the first quarter of this year. Of these, 84% were granted planning permission.

Decisions on major residential developments of ten or more homes fell by 46% compared with 2008. The proportion of all applications dealt with in the 13-week target period fell from 72% to 71%.
