Clearing up after the flooding that struck northern Scotland last week could cost Moray Council up to £5m.

Hundreds of properties were evacuated in the towns of Elgin and Fochaber. The council said on September 7 that 46 households – 110 people – were still being housed in temporary accommodation. The clear-up was being hampered by large amounts of silt deposited by overflowing rivers.

The council was making sewage contamination its priority and warned residents to avoid using local parks until they had been inspected by Scottish Water experts.
