The Welsh Assembly Government should immediately publish information on recent initiatives to support the recession-hit economy and draw up longer-term plans, a committee of AMs has said.

In a report published on May 14, the National Assembly for Wales’ enterprise and learning committee commended the WAG on the ‘rapidity and flexibility’ of its response to the recession.

But it urged that more information be given on the ‘plethora of recent announcements on support for business and other aspects of economic development’.

The WAG has taken steps to support businesses and people losing their jobs during the economic downturn.

These include paying 92.5% of invoices within ten days and holding economic summits bringing together the public sector, industry and trade unions.

However, the cross-party committee recommended the Assembly Government now plan for longer-term growth and a higher skills base for when the recovery begins.

Committee chair Gareth Jones said the ‘cross-cutting link between employment and skills, between education and economic development’ needed to be strengthened.

A spokeswoman for the WAG said a broad range of measures had been introduced to try to ‘protect jobs and to help protect the skills base’ of the workforce.
