Local government unions have called for an above-inflation pay rise this year, with additional wage increases for the lowest paid workers.

The 2009 claim, submitted on January 14, covers more than a million council staff in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It says any rise should be at least the level of the retail price index.

Unison local government head Heather Wakefield said: 'It cannot be right that whilst council chiefs have been delivering efficiency savings above and beyond those called for by central government, council staff have been forced into debt by year after year of below-inflation pay awards.'
