Beverly Malone, the general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, is to stand down next January and return to the United States.

She is to take up a position as chief executive of the National League of Nursing, based in New York.

She has led the RCN since June 2001.

'My time at the RCN has been one of the most rewarding and inspiring periods in my professional life,' she said.

'I joined the RCN at a pivotal stage in nursing's history, with huge reform of the NHS on the horizon.

'Now, more than five years on, nurses have well and truly pushed back the boundaries, extending their role and improving care for patients.'
