Local government ombudsman Tony Redmond topped the poll for the second year running in this year's election to the CIPFA Council.

His 1,900 votes – well ahead of the 1,741 he garnered a year ago – assured him of a seat on the 2006/07 Council. Former CIPFA president Mike Barnes took second place with 1,803 votes, and third spot went to Jeff Pipe, corporate governance adviser at Transport for London (1,749).

Jaki Meekings, the director of specialist commissioning for the South Strategic Health Authorities, was fourth with 1,574 votes.

Only one new Council member was elected this year – Kevin Orford, the NHS financial controller at the Department of Health. Orford received 1,498 votes to come fifth overall.

However, the full Council will include seven regional co-options, plus the four main officer posts: Caroline Gardner, the incoming president; John Butler, the next vice-president; Diane Colley, the outgoing president; and Chris Hurford, the institute's treasurer. A further eight co-options can also be added. Turnout was up slightly this year at 25%.
