All 160,000 registered charities in England and Wales are to be surveyed to determine which public services they provide.

According to the Charity Commission, there is no comprehensive information on the range of public services charities provide. Previously, attention has been focused on charities' commissioning activities rather than their role as providers.

Announcing the survey on March 21, charity commissioner Lindsay Driscoll said: 'Snapshot surveys of the involvement of voluntary organisations delivering public services are useful, but by asking all charities about their work in this area we'll be able to establish the extent of this activity across the whole sector.'
