Scottish Water has improved its efficiency and slashed operating costs but it could still do better, according to a report from Audit Scotland this week.
The body, which provides water to 2.2 million households and 133,000 non-domestic customers, took over from the previous three water authorities in April 2002.
Auditor general Bob Black said: 'Scottish Water has made significant improvements in its efficiency and performance, but there is scope for more. A robust regulatory regime is appropriate.'
The report says the body has a challenge in delivering its capital investment schedule, and will still have £253m of work left from its £1.8bn programme by its April 2006 deadline.
