Local authorities are meeting recycling targets, according to the Local Government Association's environment board.
Provisional Best Value figures from councils issued this week show that they have increased recycling from 17% in 2003/04 to 23% in 2004/05.
Board chair David Sparks commended councils for their dedication to recycling, 'with many setting ambitious targets and often exceeding them'.
But the LGA is still demanding more government support to help 'the funding shortfall for essential environmental services'.
The government target is to recycle 25% of waste by the end of 2006.
