Clive Grace, the deputy auditor general for Wales, has announced that he is to leave his post at the end of this month.

Grace is leaving the Wales Audit Office, which opened on April 1, after overseeing its creation over the past two years. The new body was born of a merger between the Audit Commission in Wales and the Welsh National Audit Office.

Jeremy Colman, the auditor general for Wales, paid tribute to Grace, saying he had played a major role in strengthening public audit in the principality. 'His clarity of purpose and change management skills meant that demanding deadlines were met so that the new organisation was fully operational from April 1, 2005.'

Grace, who was previously the director-general of the ACW, said he was proud to have led the project but was leaving to concentrate on his academic and charitable interests. 'It has been a privilege to work on behalf of the people of Wales in helping to secure that public money has been properly spent,' he added.

Grace will join Cardiff University Business School as an honorary research fellow in local governance.
