Government plans to cut re-offending have failed to recognise the vital part councils should play, town hall leaders said this week.
The Local Government Association is disappointed that the Management of Offenders and Sentencing Bill ignores the contribution council services such as housing, social services and education can make.
An LGA report published on February 3 claimed the success of Youth Offending Teams could be attributed to the central role taken by local government.
Bryony Rudkin, chair of the LGA's safer communities board, said councils were 'perfectly placed' to co-ordinate a multi-agency approach.
'We will continue to lobby the government on this point as the Bill passes through Parliament,' she said.
