Further education colleges have been forced to put a new system of three-year accounting on hold because of doubts over how much money will be available after 2005/06.

A 5% increase in rates of funding for the coming year means that colleges will receive a total of £4.9bn from the Learning and Skills Council from July.

But the LSC has admitted it would be impossible for colleges to plan further ahead.

John Brennan, chief executive of the Association of Colleges, said three-year planning should have meant stability. 'We are now being told that allocations for 2006/7 and 2007/8 will not be confirmed until this autumn.'
