Around 200 developers and other organisations have expressed an interest in bidding for grants to build social housing under a scheme due to get under way next month.

The expressions of interest, to be received by the Housing Corporation before the closing date on February 18, will be studied closely before £200m is allocated.

The National Housing Federation, which opposes social housing grant being offered to other organisations, said grants were obviously attractive to developers but social landlords provided better prospects of sustainable development and long-term effectiveness.
