Tenants in social housing are receiving record financial support while help for homeowners has plummeted, says a new report.

According to the UK housing review published on November 1, benefits and subsidies in the social sector rose by 71% between 1990/91 and 2002/03 — from £6.3bn to £10.8bn.

Assistance for private sector tenants more than doubled during the same period, from £1.5bn to £3.2bn, but homeowners received far less support than in the early 1990s.

A total of £933m was paid to homeowners in benefits, tax reliefs, grants and subsidies in 2002/03 — just 10% of the £9.3bn on offer 12 years earlier.
