Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir John Stevens has attacked the Home Office for setting too many targets for the police service.

In a newspaper interview, Stevens said there should be only a small number of general targets.

There were 'far too many targets' at present, he argued. 'There should be two or three, like the reduction in crime, and public satisfaction,' he said.

Stevens also complained that the police did not get enough credit for their successes. 'There needs to be, from more political parties, a recognition that we are doing a damn good job.'

But, he warned: 'We must not be politicised. The greatest threat to British policing is [to] our independence.'
