Council tenants in Nottingham have voted in favour of an arm's-length management organisation after the local authority mounted a £200,000 publicity campaign.

Forty per cent of Nottingham's 37,500 tenants took part in the ballot that saw a three to one vote for the Almo. The council needs to raise £165m to improve its 32,000 homes.

Lynne Pennington, the council's executive board member for housing, said: 'The proposal to set up an Almo is probably the most important decision that has ever faced tenants and leaseholders.'

Nottingham is in the government's fourth-round Almo programme. Funding allocations, which depend on Almos gaining two inspection stars, will be announced next month.

Housing minister Keith Hill has already indicated that councils should expect to receive at least 80% of the money requested. Nottingham Council ran a relatively short campaign that prevented Defend Council Housing from mounting a large anti-Almo campaign.

Meanwhile, the National Federation of Almos announced on August 2 that Dennis Rees, a council tenant in Derby and chair of Derby Homes, will be the first chair of the federation's new board.
