Unesco has been called in to arbitrate in a dispute between Edinburgh residents and the city council – over wheelie-bins.
The United Nations' cultural organisation has been asked to rule that the bins, which the council wants used in a well-heeled area of the city's New Town, are an eyesore. In 1995 New Town was granted World Heritage status by Unesco.
Local councillor David Guest said: 'It is a shambles. These bins are crass and incongruous.'
Edinburgh City Council, which uses wheelie-bins in other prestige areas such as Morningside and Newington, said it was waiting for confirmation that Unesco would intervene.
