More than half of Edinburgh's residents come from outside the city, according to a survey carried out by Mori Scotland on behalf of the council.
It found that a quarter were born elsewhere in Scotland, just under 20% in other parts of Britain and one in ten from beyond the UK.
Council leader Donald Anderson said: 'We are a cosmopolitan city that has always welcomed newcomers. In return, they have made their contribution to a vibrant culture and a thriving economy.'
The £20,000 survey of 1,002 Edinburgh residents was conducted in October 2005.
A council spokesman said: 'Edinburgh's population reflects its position as a dynamic capital city.'
