Only one in five councils in England and Wales has implemented the historic single status agreement on pay and conditions six years after it was signed, a survey from the GMB union has found.

The survey found that just over half of councils have begun to address the agreement.

More alarmingly, 17% of authorities have failed to do anything at all.

The three local authority unions, Unison, T&G and the GMB, are demanding single status to be completed within two years as part of this year's pay claim.

'Gender pay inequality has no place in local government,' said Mick Graham, the GMB's national secretary.
