A senior Number 10 public services adviser is to take a leading role in the new Commission for Social Care Inspection.

Judith Thomas is to become the head of communications at the commission when it starts work in April.

The CSCI, which will cover the work of the Social Services Inspectorate, the National Care Standards Commission and that jointly undertaken by the SSI and the Audit Commission, will monitor and inspect all social care services.

In other appointments announced this week, Jonathan Phillips becomes the CSCI's head of quality, performance and methods, and Paul Snell is to be head of inspection, regulation and review.
