E-voting is being imposed on electors across Europe, even though ballots may not be secure or accurate, the Foundation for Information Policy Research, an IT think-tank, has warned.
The warning comes amid debates in the US, Ireland and Australia over the reliability of e-voting equipment.
The FIPR says that e-voting is established in Belgium and Switzerland, with trials taking place in the UK, France, Spain and Ireland, yet the equipment fails to combine anonymity with the voter-verifiable audit trails needed to guarantee against fraud.
Ian Brown, director of FIPR, said: 'Unsafe e-voting systems could prove a very expensive way to destroy voter trust in elections.'
