Health Secretary John Reid announced £93m to fund three cardiac schemes this week in the latest tranche of the government's ten-year modernisation plan for heart services.
Basildon Hospital will receive the lion's share of the funding, with £56.2m for a new cardiac centre. Nottingham City Hospital will receive £20.9m and the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester £16.6m to fund additional
in-patient beds and laboratory services.
The schemes are funded from a £582m capital investment pot for cardiac services announced in March 2001.
'The new schemes I have announced will shorten waits and ensure that staff can care for patients in first-rate modern facilities,' Reid said.
