Labour members on the Local Government Association have lost seven seats to the Conservatives across its executive committees to reflect proportional changes after May's local elections.

The Tories now chair seven out of a total of 20 of the LGA's ruling executives. These include social affairs and health, rural, planning and tourism.

Labour controls eight executives, while the Liberal Democrats chair four and independents one.

For the first time, the Conservatives have taken the chair of the environmental and regeneration committee. Sir Ron Watson of Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council will take the helm.
