Housing needs more than cash, says Falconer

Employers should not rely on public subsidy to create all the affordable homes needed for key workers, housing professionals were told this week.

Speaking at the Southeast regional housing conference in St Albans, Hertfordshire, housing minister Lord Falconer said: 'It is clear that there is no realistic prospect of the gap being filled by public subsidy alone – nor can it realistically be met only by building more homes.' He called on local authorities, registered social landlords and private developers to 'start thinking more dynamically about widening access to housing'.

He praised some of the schemes in the starter home initiative, which received £7m from the government. 'Some use land to subsidise price, and other initiatives involve entering into arrangements with developers and RSLs to provide accommodation at below market rents.'
