The list of applications for the large-scale voluntary transfer (LSVT) programme, announced by the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions this week, is headed by Sheffield, which is proposing to transfer its entire stock of 64,704 homes.

Middlesbrough (13,326 homes), Stockport (12,883) and Solihull (11,800) are also proposing major transfers while other councils wish to offload only part of their stock.

The total number of homes involved is just over 180,000, well within the government's target figure of 200,000 per year. A final list of those joining the rolling two-year programme in 2002 will be announced in the next two months.
