The government's £2bn New Deal for Communities programme is helping to cut crime rates and boost the local economy in some areas, the first annual review has shown.

The ten-year scheme has generated some striking early successes. By pumping extra policing resources into New Deal areas, crime has fallen by 40% in Sandwell in the West Midlands, and in nearby Walsall, burglary rates have been slashed by 25%.

Lord Falconer, the minister for renewal, said the review highlighted lessons that could be drawn on by other authorities planning to set up similar schemes. 'The achievements of NDC partnerships, after just one year, are immensely encouraging,' he said.

Other schemes designed to boost the economy and improve the local environment are also proving successful.
